僕の友人がこの絵の持ち主の子孫を探しています。

この絵は第2次世界大戦中に上海で僕の友人の曾祖父がユダヤ人から譲り受けたものです。

第2次大戦中、ナチス支配下にあったヨーロッパ地域からは多数のユダヤ人が上海へ逃れてきており、上海ゲットーと呼ばれたユダヤ人の居住地がありました。

ユダヤ人たちは非常に結束が固い中で、太平洋戦争に突入するまではアメリカを中心に世界各地から支援物資が届いていたようですが、太平洋戦争に突入以降は支援物資も途絶え、彼らの生活は困窮を極めていたようです。

特に1943年頃以降は飢えが蔓延するような状況で、ユダヤ人たちは自分たちが故郷から避難してくる際に持っていた貴重な財産を売ることで何とか生活をしていたようです。

そんな中で、この絵の持ち主はどのような経緯か分かりませんが、この絵を僕の友人の曾祖父に譲ったようです。

ヨーロッパからわざわざ上海までこの絵を持って避難してきていたということは彼らの家族にとっては非常に大切な品であったのは間違いない話で、それを断腸の思いで売られたのだと思います。

そんな絵が時代を経て、今日本にあるのですが、僕の友人はその子孫の方に返してあげることができればと言っています。
